Having a credit card can bring you much relief when it comes to buying things that normally will take you time to save up money for. Many people, however, are leery of getting one because of the possible problems they can run into when they own a card

Owning or using a credit card does not lead to a person going into debt. Rather, careless use and improper financial management are the real culprits, along with actions like impulse buying, charging beyond the credit limit or tardiness in paying dues.
Credit cards give its owners more buying power. Unfortunately for some, it lulls them into a false sense of security because they can buy what they want without shelling out cash. Frequent impulse buying causes the bills to pile up and if left unchecked, may lead to overcharging a card which then leads to further expenses, like over-the-limit fees or late-payment fees.

How to control your credit card expenses

First, spend only what you can afford. Most people get a credit card to avail of the exciting rewards they can get when paying for purchases and services. This is an excellent idea especially if you use the card regularly and within the limits of your budget. Do not go on a shopping spree when you know that you will barely be able to make the minimum payment.

Second, use the card only when necessary. Despite the previous tip, limiting credit card use is still your best bet in minimizing the debts you have to pay. Keep credit cards for bigger purchases, such as a gadget or furniture, or even plane tickets. Try to keep the expenses down as well. Use the card and wait until you have paid off the debt (or at least 60% of it) before using it again.

Third, know your credit card. Ask the card issuer about the interest rates and the various fees and services that they have. This includes fees like late payment, over-the-limit fees, annual fees, credit card security and insurance, and the like. This is so that you know how much you will be charged each month, or at the very least, get a ballpark range. Ask them if they have any charges even if you pay your bill on time. Ideally, cards that do not have an annual fee and do not have charges beyond late-payment is what you should get.

Plan your credit card use

Put these first three tips together and you are already on your way to using your card properly. Look around various shops and compare prices. Pick the one that has the best overall bargain: low product price, zero to low interest and no service charges, and a payment plan spread out in three, six or twelve months. Calculate all the potential costs, divide it by the number of months the payment is due and you have the amount you need to set aside each month.

Finally, pay on time. To eliminate the unnecessary interest rates and late-payment charges, pay your bills on or before the due date. Set aside the cash you need and pay off that debt! Or, you can enroll your card in an auto-pay service. Deposit the money into that account and your credit card company will automatically debit the amount due.

Owning a credit card need not be a hassle. With proper management, your credit card will be a powerful tool in your hands.
